Way off topic :) I decided I needed a new Tool Roll-a-way
« on: November 15, 2014, 07:01:38 PM »
I looked at what was available out in the world and couldn't find what I wanted.  I wanted lots of drawers.  Lots of shallow drawers (who needs a 4" deep drawer for a set of wrenches?).  I couldn't find what I wanted and what I did find with the exception of the Harbor Freight stuff was ridiculously priced.  So I made one :)  Being dtsFABRICATION I thought you guys might enjoy the journey.

We'll start with the finished product :)

Then we start.  The "box" has to be virtually a perfect cube otherwise the drawer slides will never work right. So you gotta be smart about how you weld it so when it cools it doesn't become a pretzel.

Lots and lots of grinding/filling/grinding/filling/...  in those corners.  It's painful making it smooth without Bondo and when it's going in the powder coat oven Bondo just isn't an option.

The pivots for the handles (I found a smoking deal on a piloted counterbore on Ebay.  I'll never buy one for full price again :)  )

Back from the powdercoater.

These pictures show how I decided to hold the top box to the bottom box.  No scratches, no movement and it's never gonna slip :)

The handles.  How convenient to have a 1" tube bending die  ;)

The way the pivots work.

Soft-close slides.  This is the place to buy them half the price of anywhere else and they work great.  CSHardware.com

This is what I worked on today.  This takes a LONG time.

You could quit your day job and make them full time.

There are lots of guys with lots of money that would gladly pay the price for one.  So very unique.

Just a suggestion,LAB-Metal High Temp WILL withstand a PC oven temp. It would speed up your PC "bodywork" tremendously if you were to do others, for others. Here is a link to the product info. I have used it several times with outstanding results. Sorry no pics tho.

I'm SO ready to quit my day job.  Hook me up with the rich guys :)  All I know are poor (seriously!  It might be glamorous but you'll never get rich) rocket engineers.

I dipped the whole set in red paint on the ends so I could tell they were mine when I went to Houston to do this.  Those are the only ones with red paint still on them after 15+ years.
